Maintaining your dog's health is vital for your dog's care. They are susceptible to various diseases and poisons, some of which affect humans and others being characteristic for dogs only. They are also exposed to certain genetic diseases, such as hip dyslexia, clef palate, blindness or deafness. Similar to humans, they can suffer from diabetes, epilepsy or cancer. Gastric torsion and bloat is a dangerous problem in breeds that have a large chest.

The lifespan of a dog varies according to the breed he belongs to. Giant dog breeds can live up to 7 or  8 years, while smaller ones, like the terrier, live for 20 years or above. Mixed breeds have an average lifespan of 13 or 14 years. Lifespan is indeed uncontrollable, but the owner can extends a dog's life by feeding it the right food, treating diseases and giving it regular exercises.

Common external parasites are various species of fleas, ticks, and mites, while internal parasites that dogs suffer from are round, tape, heartworms and hookworms. In what follows, you will find out some general information about dog's most common problems: obesity, skin disease, vaccination or skin care. To end with, here are some useful tips for a healthier pet:

  • Using metal in the dishes may be a risk because the pet's tongue can stick to it; in the summer, the metal can get overheated and the pet may get a burn.
  • For dogs that pee on the carpet, put some bicarbontae of soda on that place after cleaning it; this will absorb unpleasant odors and remove the traces on the carpet.
  • Carefully watch your dog if you put it on a choke chain because it could strangle your dog.
  • Attend your dog in hot days because temperature could reach fatal levels.
  • When your dog is teething buy him a few cheap clothes so that you can avoid having your couches chewed.
  • Do not leave your dog in an area with phone cords or dangling drape cords because it may strange on them.
  • If you want to stop your dog from digging, put cayenne pepper in the holes.
