Shih-Tzu (Chrysanthemum Dog)

This small dog is covered with a double coat of long hair, having a woolly undercoat. The Shih-Tzu has a short hairy muzzle, black nose, large eyes and pendant ears. Even though they are small in size, the dogs of this breed are alert and spunky. They are dignified, careful with children and polite with people around them. Even though they are courageous, they may often seem arogant.

The loyal dog makes friends easily and, even though it is obstinate, it responds well to consistent training. The Shih-Tzu is stubborn and likes to bark but it refrains from doing so inside the house. This playful and cheerful dog needs the company of humans and acts well with other pets. With a life expectancy of more than 15 years, the small breed is prone to ear, eye and respiratory problems.

The long back and short legs may also cause spinal problems. The veterinarian needs to pay special attention to the hygiene of the dog's teeth because they tend to be easily lost. Also, pay attention not to overfeed him, because it gain weight very easily. The breed is sensitive to heat but is an excellent apartment dog, being very active indoors. Even though it can sometimes lay around in its favorite corner, the dog must be encourage to get out. Daily walks are a good idea.
